How to keep your cupboards organised (without the stress)

June 18, 2025

Cupboards can get messy fast. Our latest blog post explores simple steps on how to keep them neat and tidy.

Cupboards can get messy fast. One minute they’re neat and tidy and the next, you’re rummaging through half-empty packets and mystery containers. But getting your cupboards organised doesn’t have to be hard. With a few simple steps, you can set up a system that looks great and saves you time - making daily life that bit easier.

Here’s a straightforward guide to keeping your cupboards in check and keeping them that way.

1. Start with a clean-out

Before you do anything else, go through everything in your cupboard. Check expiry dates, toss anything you’re never going to use and be honest about what’s just taking up space. If it’s been sitting there for months untouched, chances are it’s not going to suddenly become useful.

This is your chance to clear the clutter and make room for things that actually serve a purpose in your daily routine.

2. Sort items into categories

Once you’ve cleared things out, start grouping what’s left into categories. Think snacks, baking, canned goods, sauces, breakfast items - you get the idea. Creating these clear categories will help you know exactly where things go (and where to find them later).

3. Choose the right containers for your needs

Now it’s time to bring in some order. Clear or white tubs are perfect for storing your grouped items. Clear tubs are especially handy if you’re someone who likes to see what’s inside at a glance. This can be a great tip for people with ADHD or anyone who prefers visual cues.

The idea isn’t to spend a fortune on matching containers. Use what works for you, whether it’s budget-friendly plastic tubs or something a bit fancier. As long as it helps you stay organised, it’s doing its job.

4. Label everything and think about how you use your space

Label each container so you’re not guessing what’s inside, and place them on the shelf in a way that makes sense for your routine. Keep the things you use most often at eye level, and store the occasional-use items up higher or down low.

This simple habit will save you heaps of time and frustration every day.

5. Keep it tidy (but don’t overthink it!)

Your new setup isn’t meant to be perfect but rather it’s meant to work for you. Try to put things back where they belong, but don’t stress if it’s not picture-perfect. The goal is to save yourself effort, not create more stress.

6. Let the calm spread

Once your cupboards are sorted, you might find that you’re inspired to bring that same sense of order to other parts of your home. That’s the beauty of it, getting organised can have a ripple effect on other aspects of your life.

So take it one cupboard at a time, be kind to yourself, and enjoy the ease that comes with a bit of thoughtful organisation.
